During the coronavirus lockdown, we started playing more games due to the amount of free time we got all of a sudden. And as a result, the interest in many games, old and new, skyrocketed. 2020 was a big year for gamers and the number of Dota 2 players in Q4 2020 proves it.

10. As of January 2022, the record average number of Dota 2 viewers on Twitch is 133,000 people.

Twitch Dota 2 is a favorite place for Dota 2 players and viewers. The game has been a hit since its release back in 2013 and it’s still engaging the Dota 2 fanbase. And in 2021, the Dota 2 International Championship attracted thousands of viewers on the platforms.

11. As of January 2022, people have played a total of 335 million hours of Dota 2 on Steam.

(Source: Steam Charts)

According to the Dota 2 Steam Charts, people have spent more than 335 million hours playing Dota 2 on Steam so far. The game comes second after CS:GO of course, but the difference between the time spent in each game turns out to be insignificant. Gamers all over the world have played a total of 339 million hours of CS:GO on Steam as of 2022.

12. In February 2021, Dota 2 had 7.6 million monthly active users.

(Source: Statista)

When a game has a peak number of concurrent players of between 660,000 and 760,000 on Steam, it’s hardly surprising that there were 7.6 million active users across all platforms last year. The game published by Valve Corporation is available for PC, macOS, and Linux.

13. In 2021, the prize pool of Dota 2 International reached the $40 million mark.

(Source: Esports)

In comparison, in 2019, the total Dota 2 tournament prize pool amounted to $46.97 million. This is quite astonishing if we put things into perspective. The estimated prize pool for CS:GO tournaments for 2023 is just around $46 million. Both Dota 2 and Counter-Strike are super popular and eSports teams all over the world compete against each other for the battle of a lifetime.

14. As of 2021, 91% of all Dota 2 players have played the game for more than 3 years.

(Source: r/Dota 2 Demographics Report 2021)

According to Dota 2 demographics, the vast majority of Dota 2 players have played the game for more than three years. 23% of all the respondents in the survey answered that they play Dota 2 for between 4 and 8 hours every week. The game is far too immersive for people to stay inactive and watch only.  According to the latest Dota 2 players statistics, 30% are primarily viewers.

League of Legends vs Dota 2

Which one is better MOBA and is there a definite winner in a battle between League of Legends vs Dota 2? Both communities say the game they play is the ultimate best but we decided to take an unbiased look at the state of things. We compared the games in terms of player count, gameplay, graphics, and characters. Keep reading and discover the differences and similarities between the two best MOBA games 2022. Here we go:

The Dota 2 player count vs LoL is our first stop in this comparison. More than 2 million people play League of Legends concurrently across all platforms every day in 2022, a player count few games can boast with. We might conclude that the latest Dota 2 player count is a quarter of the LoL player count.

Now, in terms of gameplay and graphics, both games have their merits but since we’re trying to be unbiased, we need to give the advantage to League of Legends here. The LoL gameplay is faster and definitely better looking than Dota 2. In terms of number of characters, League definitely scores high - in Q4 2021, there were already 157 League of Legends champions to choose from and the developers say there’s a new batch coming in early 2022. Dota 2 features “only” 122 heroes so far. It’s not a huge difference anyway.

Now, in terms of new content releases, Dota 2 makes a better job than League. Despite the fact that League of Legends welcomes new heroes and skins frequently, the new content Dota 2 releases definitely go beyond skins and characters.

No matter how challenging both games are and how different the pacing and graphics are, one thing is for sure - in a duel between League of Legends vs Dota 2, there simply can not be a winner. Both have given the gaming community an amazing experience and an immersive world to explore and protect.
